Joe Hill Prison Commitment Register Entry

Three years ago I had the opportunity to work with the folks at the Department of Corrections and State Prison on preserving their historic records as they worked to move out of the State Prison site in Draper. It was a monumental effort that resulted in a wide variety of records that document the prison going back to Utah’s territorial period being transferred to the Utah State Archives and Records Service. Among these records are the Prison Commitment Registers that the prison kept to document those who were incarcerated. It is an incredible collection, and this week I pulled our register book that features labor leader, Joe Hill. You can read more about his story here. These records are held by the Utah State Archives and Records Service and can be found in series 80388.
